The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association

The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association is a peer-reviewed scientific journal and a membership magazine for the Norwegian Medical Association. The content is primarily published in Norwegian and we offer translation into English. The journal is edited in line with the Declaration on the Rights and Duties of the Editor and follows the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). It is also a member of the Norwegian Trade Press Association (Fagpressen) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Tidsskriftet is also a member of DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals).

Our objectives are to:

  • be a medium for medical education that stimulates doctors to maintain and enhance their clinical skills.
  • encourage medical research and professional development
  • contribute to the development of ethical and cultural standards in the medical community
  • foster debate on health policy issues
  • be a membership magazine for the Norwegian Medical Association

Organisation

The journal is owned by the Norwegian Medical Association, and the editorial team is organised as a department in the Association. There is a separate section in the journal for membership news. The remainder of the journal is edited and produced by the journal’s editorial staff.

The journal is editorially independent in accordance with the Act on editorial freedom, and is edited in line with the principles set out in the Declaration on the Rights and Duties of the Editor, the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Code of Ethics of the Norwegian Press.

The Editorial Board advises the editor-in-chief on strategic and operational matters. The committee consists of up to eight members and is appointed by the editor-in-chief for a period of four years.

Publication model

All content is published on the website tidsskriftet.no and is freely accessible to all. All published articles from 1 January 2002 onwards are available on Tidsskriftet.no and are fully searchable. Most articles are included in the paper edition, which is published 18 times a year. The paper edition is sent to all members of the Medical Association, including medical students and a range of libraries, hospitals, and institutions. The circulation is approximately 33 950 (January 2021). Each issue carries the Nordic Swan ecolabel. The journal is printed in Norway.

There is no submission fee or article processing charge (APC). If the article is translated into English, the authors pay the cost.

Content and editorial process

The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association is a general medical journal and publishes various types of article. The paper edition is divided into three sections: opinions, medical science, and features. All the scientific articles are subject to external peer review as well as an editorial assessment prior to potential publication (see outline). Opinion-articles submitted to the journal generally do not undergo external peer review. The journal also publishes short news reports, profile interviews and other content mostly produced by the staff. Online, all articles have a comments field that remains open for 12 months after publication. A selection of the submitted commentaries is included in the paper edition.

The journal publishes 35–70% of the scientific manuscripts submitted, depending on the type of article. We publish about to out of three of the perspective and the opinion articles. The authors have a right to appeal. In 2020, we published 57 original articles, 22 review articles, and 48 case reports. The time from submission to publication varies but normally it takes 20 to 30 weeks for scientific articles and about three weeks for opinion articles.

Indexing and publication points

The article’s metadata is transferred to PubMed/Medline for indexing shortly after publication. PubMed/Medline independently assess which articles they will index. Pubmed/Medline presents a summary and links to the full-text version on tidsskriftet.no. If translated into English, the article will be presented as available in two languages on PubMed/Medline.

The journal is registered as a Level 1-journal in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers. This means that some types of articles will provide publication points. This is decided by the institutions themselves.
